The Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is  located in Khao Pra Theaw Non-Hunting Area at the Bang Pae Waterfall, Phuket, Thailand. This is about 9 km. east from the Heroines Monument. You can visit the center and see many of the gibbons from the viewing platform. The Mega Tour will soon be introducing our guests to The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project as part of our continued drive to embrace and promote ethical tourism in Phuket. Many visitors to the tourist areas of Thailand may have encountered these beautiful animals held captive and used as photo props for tourists to hold and cuddle. Though this may seem harmless at the time there is a dark underside to this business and something that needs to be permanently addressed. The below video was produced by Phuket Web Media for Earth Touch News Network and highlights the problems facing these beautiful creatures and the amazing work.

The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project aims to Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release exploited gibbons from around Thailand. In the not so distant past the island of Phuket had a healthy, wild Gibbon population that was sadly driven to the edge of extinction due to to habitat loss and hunting. Nowadays the Khao Pra Theaw Non-Hunting Area is home to a growing population of rescued and released White-handed Gibbons thanks to the continued efforts of the GRP and WARF.  Visitors to the GRP will learn first hand of the efforts to rehabilitate rescued Gibbons and have the opportunity to sponsor their own Gibbon. The project depends entirely on private funding.

“One of the less pleasant aspects of the tourist industry worldwide is the exploitation of wild animals.  On the face of it, posing with a cute baby animal for that memorable holiday photo seems harmless enough until you start to question how that animal came to be there sharing the same space and time as you in a totally alien environment, being made to behave in a totally unnatural way, often by the use of drugs, or physical abuse.”

Join the Mega Tour for some sightseeing around Phuket and let us show you around some of the little know attractions on the island. Help bathe the elephants at the Elephant Retirement Camp, meet some rescued gibbons at the Gibbon Rehabilitation Center, get away from the other tourists and see the real Phuket! Hailed as the most successful Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in the world, GRP have dedicated the last twenty years to rehabilitating abused Gibbons to the point where they can be released back into the wild in a sustainable way.
